A core team of about 25 people manage Canadian Oil Sands’ business, providing operations oversight, financial, accounting, business development, crude oil marketing, legal and investor relations services for the Trust. Our office is located in Calgary, Alberta.
The daily operations of Syncrude are managed by Syncrude Canada Ltd., who employs about 5,000 people, most of whom work at the facility located north of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Controller
Start date: March 1, 2010
Location: Calgary, Alberta
This position will appeal to an individual with substantial Controller experience, a strong financial reporting background and interest in mentoring members of a team. A desire to maintain a small and efficient operation requires an individual willing to perform a broad range of financial responsibilities.
As Controller, your duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Leading a team of 3-4, you are responsible for the generation and review of monthly financial statements, account reconciliations and supporting documents;

Preparation of quarterly/annual Management’s Discussion and Analysis, and review of quarterly/annual financial statements and notes;

Preparation of quarterly reports and presentations to Audit Committee and Board of Directors;

Research/review new accounting policies applicable to the Trust, including International Financial Reporting Standards;

Determine appropriate staffing levels, develop, supervise and provide mentorship to accounting team;

Management of Canadian Oil Sands’ internal controls over financial reporting;

Together with the Chief Financial Officer, and working with our external tax advisors, facilitate the planning, preparation and oversight of tax reporting and compliance;

Liaison with Syncrude finance and accounting staff;

Coordination and facilitation of the audit, review and internal control aspects of our engagements with both the external and internal auditors; and
-
Approval of weekly accounts payable processing and semi monthly payroll processing.
Handling of Various Special Projects
Overseeing or managing various special projects that arise for COS including, without limitation, the conversion from an income trust to a corporate structure, assistance with various acquisition and divestures of assets.
Canadian Oil Sands has a small corporate head office and the Controller is expected to assume a diverse range of activities in addition to the specific items noted above. These duties include involvement in corporate M&A and business development activities and input on operational and business growth strategies.
Qualifications/Competencies
We are looking for a CA with a minimum of ten years’ relevant business experience. The ideal candidate would bring a strong understanding of the oil and gas industry, and specifically the oil sands. Tax knowledge is considered an asset.
The successful candidate will have achieved success in other organizations and is looking to increase his/her contribution as part of a small team directly managing a large business.
