Alberta's oil sands resource is a major driver of economic growth and prosperity. With the largest oil sands production facility in the world, Syncrude produces 15% of Canada's total oil requirements. In addition to supporting Canada's reputation as a long-term, secure source of energy, our Syncrude operations have a tremendous, positive impact on local communities and the Canadian economy. Our contribution includes:
- $1.1 billion in Crown royalties estimated to be paid in 2007 alone.
- $50 billion in spending on capital and operating expenditures -- directly into the economies of Alberta and Canada -- between 1979 and 2006.
- Over $10 billion invested in capital projects in the past 10 years alone.
- Over $7.5 billion paid to government for royalties, payroll and municipal taxes and other Crown charges since Syncrude’s startup in 1978.
- $4.2 billion in total contribution to the Alberta and Canadian economies in 2006 with about $3.7 billion benefiting the Alberta economy alone.
- Syncrude employs 4,527 people in Alberta and provides jobs for thousands of additional contractors.
- Largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people in Canada, and conducts in excess of $125 million annually with Aboriginal businesses.
- $40 million spent annually on research and development, making Syncrude one of the top R&D spenders in the country.
- One in every four dollars spent on Syncrude’s most recent $8.5 billion expansion was invested in technologies to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance.
- $4.6 million in charitable donations made during 2006 to Alberta’s communities.
